South African abalone

South African abalone (also known as peacock abalone in Hong Kong) is a very precious species. South Africans call it Perlemoen ("Mother of Pearls"). South African abalone is one of three rare abalone species that can only be found in South African waters. However, because South African green abalone is too popular, overfished and grows very slowly, it takes 8 to 10 years to mature and reach edible standards.
